Leicester Open
Kettering - 2006

The event

A lavish 12 badminton court hall lay empty while 143 fencers, their bags, parents and coaches were crammed into a reduced version of a four badminton court hall. This should teach fencers not to enter late and pay £25 for it. But as the organisers rightly said "well done to the fencers for making the day go well and without complication... for the record the last final finished at 6:50pm". Personally I was lucky. I was in the first half of the pools. So once I finished I knew that I can safely catch up on two hours of sleep while the second half of pools battle it out and then the women's rounds are done. getting a bye through to the last 64 is also useful as it gives you time to get warmed up all over again. So the word is strategic thinking!! Obviously none of the above applies to the few who were eliminated from the competition after the one round :(

The event was supported by Allman and Allstar with good working equipment and PINK pists!! But for those who picked medals, top four only, they got a good size thick fencing medal.

Men's Foil
There were early disappointments when an unimpressed with referee, Charles Cooper exited the competition at 14-15. He was soon followed by Nick Stokes. The unlikely victims of the last 32 were Bob Anderson, Aladdin Sadiq and Peter McCaffrey. Not even the experienced James Row or the very experienced Nick Bell made the top 4. The eventual final was between Dan Robinson and Jamie Kember. Dan was unable to stop much of Jamie's straight attacks with deep lunges. He did put up a fight including two notable riposte flick to back at close quarters. But Jamie won comfortably 15-6 with the whole affair not taking more than 2 minutes of fencing time.

Women's Foil
There was no surprise to see Martina Emanuel and Clair Bennett facing each other in the finals. Martina beat Elaine Hughes in the semi finals while Clair beat Sara Kellett. On the day, I witnessed some very bizarre referring in women's foil, by women fencers. In the finals Martina tried some good second intention attacks and stop hits, but Clair was stronger on ripostes and attacks. Clair pinched the mach during the second period of fencing time with a 15-13 score.
